As we've seen often for this model, the engine has been swapped to make a more rugged and efficient offroad camper, the owner claimed the Subaru engine excels at the task.

Turn-key 1991 VW Vanagon Syncro with 2004 Subaru EJ251.
I built this van to be a rugged and efficient offroad camper, and it excels at the task. It’s been around the country on a 3-month tour, and out to Colorado and back in 2020. Most recently it’s served as a top-notch mobile fly fishing camp for innumerous weekends and two week-long trout safaris through New England.
Every mechanical system on the van has been serviced, and nearly all moving parts have been replaced, 95% of the work done by me personally. During every install all torque specs were meticulously honored and only top-quality components installed. 215K miles on body; 80K miles on engine (10K since complete rebuild), all other work done since 2016. Brief overview of work done below, and every receipt for each repair, upgrade, and modification is available. Some cosmetic blemishes.
• EJ251 with all-new alternator, water pump, belt and pullies. Cylinders honed and re-ringed, new WRX headgaskets
• All-new running gear, ball joints, wheel bearings, and relevant bushings
• 2” lift with heavy-duty springs, matched Bilstein B6 shock absorbers
• Insulation behind all panels
• Diesel heater installed under Z-bed; run exclusively on kerosene, heats the cabin well!
• Complete undercoat with Eastwood-type product; transmission, front diff, etc. treated with Fluid Film
• Many extras, including full insulated curtain set, dual batteries, custom cabinet and underbody storage
This van that will go anywhere at any time and be a comfortable camp in every season.
